In Slovenia, during the post-pandemic period, the number of femicides has increased. May the statistics be more favorable to us in 2024.

The increasingly alarming figures of femicides present our society with an urgent task to seriously confront this insidious issue. The majority of femicides occur within the family environment, with the perpetrators mostly being partners or close family members. This growing trend requires immediate action and a thorough reflection on our approach to gender equality. Femicide is not just a family tragedy but a result of a patriarchal society and systemic inequality.

We must stop ignoring these facts and start a serious discussion on this issue at all levels of society. Education and awareness are crucial to creating an environment where violence against women has no place.

In addressing the sensitive issue of femicide, it is necessary to strengthen legislation, establish more effective mechanisms for protecting victims, and ensure that perpetrators do not go unpunished. At the same time, we must focus on changing cultural norms and values that enable the further spread of violence against women.
